The United Nations of Green Beauty Products: Estonia

Tere!*
JOIK is an Estonian beauty and wellness brand offering a wide range of products. From candles to skincare, they aim at showcasing the best from nature.

From the start JOIK has been honest with me, regarding their use of certain preservatives. They have made a conscious decision to use certain preservatives in some of their products, – to avoid any risks of bacteria contaminations – and are open about it. However, all JOIK products are free of parabens, silicon oils and petrochemicals.
The products with a green leaf on them (such as the toner) are 100% natural and naturally-derived.  JOIK sources as locally as possible, with the exception of more exotic ingredients.
JOIK also stands against animal testing and a representative defined the company as follows: “As for our mentality – we produce completely natural ornear-natural products. Our main platform in addition to beautiful and good-smelling products is to be very honest – the product really does, what it promises.”
After putting two of their products on trial, I can certainly attest to what has just been said!
I didn’t fully blend the lotion so that you could see the color of it
It’s the first time I use this type of product : shimmering products tend to be filled with chemicals, so I was curious to see JOIK’s take on it.
This body lotion, rich in sweet almond oil, shea butter and coconut oil, is really moisturizing and quick absorbing. The shimmer effect is subtle, it’s more of a glow when you massage the product into the skin – just call me J.Glow when I use this 😉 The berry scent is absolutely lovely. Once you massage the lotion, the fruity fragrance lingers on the skin for a long time. I really don’t find it necessary to apply perfume or body spray after this. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed this product. I’m aware a shimmering product isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I’d recommend for sensitive skin and/or prone to allergies to test-patch/try a sample first : Ceteareth-15 is a common emulsifier in lotions used to soften and smooth the skin, which isn’t usually too problematic, but it can cause irritations. Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are the preservatives used here. Sodium Benzoate has a score of 3 on Ewg, and if you search online, there are some articles about the potential risks of this ingredient. We may argue it’s not the greenest product, but correct me if I’m wrong, it might be a less harmful alternative for those fond of shimmering lotions. Personally, I didn’t experience any redness, nor any other type of skin reactions following the use of the lotion, and I’ll be using this more during the festive holidays.
Ingredients: aqua, prunus amygdalus dulcis oil, butyrospermum parkii fruit oil, cocos nucifera oil, ceteareth-15 (and) glyceryl stearate, stearic acid, parfume, sodium benzoate (and) potassium sorbate, tocopherol, benzyl benzoate*, benzyl cinnamate*, linalool*, limonene*, citral*, geraniol*, cinnamic aldehyde*, coumarin*, hexyl cinnamal*, CI 77019, CI 77891 /* components of the parfume

JOIK Refreshing facial toner with Seabuckthorn and Aloe
When I first saw it, I was a bit taken aback by the look of the bottle. As you can see, the oil settles on top and it reminded me of those Lava lamps that were all the rage in the 90’s (I wasn’t allowed to have one, because my parents thought it looked really ugly, but I digress lol). However the comparison with the lamp stops there!
I thoroughly enjoyed the toner, because it does exactly what it says: it’s soothing, refreshing and revitalizing all at once.  One of the main components is Sea Buckthorn oil, which is high in essential fatty acids, carotenes, and Vitamin E. Also, Sea Buckthorn oil does not leave oily residues, it’s properly and quickly absorbed by the skin.
It’s one of those products that I feel would be suitable for everyone (if you’re not reacting/allergic to any of the ingredients that is). The hydrating aspect of this toner makes it an essential companion for winter, when you want to reach out for something against dry skin. I have oily skin, and I’ve found that it worked great to even out my skin tone, and provide a healthy glow. Dull skin be gone 🙂
Ingredients: aqua, hippophae rhamnoides oil (Sea buckthorn oil), aloe barbadensis juice, sodium benzoate (and) potassium sorbate, citrus paradisi peel oil, mentha piperita leaf oil, juniperus communis fruit oil, linalool*, citral*, limonene*, * components of natural essential oils

Overall, I was really pleased with JOIK, these two products make me want to explore more of their line. I’ll definitely purchase the toner again, and the great news is that JOIK products are available on their website and on Lovelula (worldwide shipping)

Have you tried JOIK?

Take care,
Liz

    • Thank you Audrey! No, I didn't feel like it left a film, it's easily absorbed. It balances out the "drying" feeling you can get after cleansing. xx

  • I like the sound of the toner J Glow! 😉 I'm not really a shimmery products kind of person so may hold off on that but I definitely think the toner could be something for me. I'm now looking at that, one from Akamuti and of course the famous Yuli cocoon elixir…decisions decisions! Lovely post Liz, as always 🙂 xx ps. I never got to have a lava lamp either for the same reason!

    • Thank you dearest Nic, you know the struggle, so many toners and just one face 😉 This one is almost empty as we speak, so now I'm deciding between Kahina, Laurel Skin and the upcoming one from MUN lol. Hehe I wish there was lava lamp emoji to compensate the fact that we were both denied it in our youth haha. (no wonder we get along so well!) xx

  • Love the sound of the shimmering raspberry lotion, I normally use the shimmering body oils to get that result, those don't have the preservative issue xx

    • True, I prefer oils as well. I have actually replaced almost every cream product that I used by oils. But the raspberry got me immediately, it's my favorite scent 🙂 xx

  • This tone looks A+ for my skin right now. I've noticed that most hydrating toners have glycerin; which I'm not too keen about putting on my face and I love that this one doesn't include it. Might have to pick this up as the price is pretty reasonable as well (secretly I want this toner for how cool it looks in the bottle) Great post Liz! xo

    • Thank you so much Ashtynne! Apart from its cool look haha, I was really surprised by how well the toner performed. You're right about glycerin, it's present in lots of toners but not everyone's skin reacts well to it. Sea buckthorn oil is an awesome ingredient. So far I've had only great experiences with it. xx

  • Love the look of both of these! The shimmer looks so pretty and how strange with the toner looking like that! At least it works though 🙂

    • Yes, it's a funky looking toner, and I was sceptical at first, but it's definitely one of those "don't judge a book by its cover" – type of moments. I really enjoyed it 🙂 xx
