Modern Minerals Makeup – Beauty Heroes June Box review

_1000138

Another month, another Beauty Heroes box and boy is it a good one! While Beauty Heroes’ primary focus remains skincare, whenever they decide to incorporate makeup be assured that they do it with utmost care. The June box features not one, not two, but 4 full-size products from Modern Minerals Makeup, including ones from their exciting collaboration with Lotus Wei.

For those not familiar with any of these brands, Lotus Wei and Modern Minerals are two separate brands, Lotus Wei is specialized in flower essences and elixirs, whereas Modern Minerals Makeup is a green makeup brand. The whole idea behind this collaboration was to create a makeup collection that not only enhances your natural beauty but also uplifts your spirits, thanks to their products infused with gem and flower essences. For the Beauty Heroes June box, they decided to opt for soft rose and dainty tones, which I think was an excellent idea, since it will federate most people. Of course, we all have pour personal tastes and preference when it comes to makeup colors, but everyone is able to make use of neutral shades, isn’t it?

Invigorating Lip Gloss – Citrine (clear)

Citrine is a pretty shimmery peach with applies clear on the lips: the peach won’t really show on my lips, I use it to layer on top of other colors or simply on its own when I want a bit of shimmer on my lips. Citrine is not infused with Lotus Wei flower essences and gem stones. However, if you look at the formula you can see that it’s not your average lip gloss, containing plethora of fruit and plant extracts. Upon application, I instantly feel a cooling and refreshing sensation on my lips, thanks to the menthol. Menthol also has plumping properties which is always a bonus. It is smooth and comfortable to wear, maybe not as creamy as Fitglow’s lipgloss (reviewed here) and I did sense a hint of stickiness, but nothing unpleasant.
Ingredients (citrine): Triisostearyl Citrate (natural vegetable fatty acids derv.), Organic Persea Armeniaca (Avocado) Oil, Organic Ricinus Communis (Castor) Oil, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Organic Punica Granatum (Pomegranate Seed) Oil, Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Seed Oil, Brassica Campestris/Aleurites Fordi Oil Copolymer (Vegetable Oils deriv.), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Esters, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Mentha Arvensis (Menthol), Menthyl Ethylamido Oxalate (Menthol Deriv.), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Vegetable deriv.) Emotive Lotus Wei infused lip gloss – Padparadscha (coral)

A mouthful to pronounce but what a hero product! Usually, one rates a lip product on its lasting properties and abilities to avoid numerous touch-ups, however I feel the complete opposite about the Emotive Lotus Wei infused lip glosses. The more often I apply throughout the day, the happier and relaxed I am, because the floral scent is addictive (I kid you not, I can’t help but reapply numerous times this product, my lips have never looked glossier haha). I already have the B of Love lip gloss in my makeup arsenal (as well as the matching blush from the collaboration with Beauty By Britanie, so I had already experienced their magic). Padparadscha is a soft coral with golden shimmer, so it has a warmer hue compared to B of Love. The finish remains sheer, a few coats will enable the color to show, but don’t expect any opacity. I’d love to see opaque versions though as I find their range of colors particularly beautiful. I never thought that applying a makeup product could feel so zen, yet that’s what happens when I apply a Lotus Wei infused lip gloss, the scent cheers me up every single time. I could easily see myself grabbing the whole Lotus wei infused lipgloss collection as it’s more than a lipgloss for me, it’s a flower remedy in a tube.

Swatches: bottom pic, from left to right, Padpaparadscha lip gloss, Moonstone highlighter, Rose Quartz and Citrine lip gloss

Modern Moonstone highlighter:

A Beauty Heroes exclusive, Modern Moonstone is a light golden cream highlighter. The consistency is thicker than RMS, which enables a better lasting power on my oily skin. It’s smooth, blendable and warm-toned. As you can see on the swatches above, the finish is very natural-looking, but it catches the light beautifully.
Ingredients (moonstone): Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (coconut derv.), Mica, Natural Mineral Kaolinite, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Esters, Natural Pentadecane, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Extract and Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Rose Quartz eyeshadow:

The eyeshadow Rose Quartz is a subtle yet flattering rose-gold color. It feels silky upon application and is crease-proof (note: I always apply beforehand my PuroBio primer because nothing stays put on my oily lids). It stays put all day without any product fallouts. I have a few MMM eyeshadows and I’ve been impressed by their high quality. The ingredient list is short but sweet, with rose extract and vitamin E. This is the perfect shade for the “no-makeup makeup look” as it offers a hint of shimmer to make the eyes pop, without being over-the-top. I use Modern Minerals duo fiber tapered blending brush which picks up the right amount of product and is one of the softest brushes I’ve ever used. I highly recommend their brushes as well. Since it’s a soft luminous color, I also use it as a powder highlighter and the finish looks lovely as well.
Ingredients (rose quartz): Mica, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (coconut derv.) and Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Extract, Rose Extract and Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

I did a whole makeup look using all four products. On my eyes, I applied Rose Quartz all over my eyelids and a touch of Moonstone on the inner corners to give a luminous look. I applied Moonstone on the nose bridge and top of cheekbones and finally I layered a bit of Citrine clear lip gloss on top of Padparadscha. You can easily create a fresh and effrotlessly pretty makeup look with these products. For me, makeup should always be simple to apply and comfortable to wear, and Modern Minerals Makeup embodies this philosophy perfectly.

The total retail value of the box is $96, so again the June box ($39) is a bargain, even for international customers (+ $18.95 shipping). Since Modern Minerals Makeup is not stocked outside of the US (yet), the June box is a fantastic opportunity for anyone to make their own opinion about this beautiful makeup brand and experience this new take on green makeup. You have until the 20th to order it.

Have you tried Modern Minerals Makeup? What do you think of the June box?

Take care,

  • Great review Liz. Quick question though – on the Modern Minerals website, the ingredients lists also contain red 6 lake and red 7 lake which seem to missing from your list. Is it because these specific glosses don’t contain them?

    • Thank you for your comment! I copied the ingredient list from Beauty heroes website, since they also disclose the full ingredient list for every product, however the red lake is not listed in it. So I browsed the Modern Mineral Makeup and indeed Red 6 and red 7 lake appear in every lip gloss (under “may contain”) as you mentioned. There are several possibilities: Modern Minerals Makeup grouped every possible ingredients in the “may contain” even though they may not necessarily apply for every lipgloss or there has been a reformulation. I’ll ask Diane from Modern Minerals Makeup and get back to you. Thanks again! xx
